How to make friends in Athens as a newcomer or visitor
Athens is a city that lives outdoors and late. That makes it one of the easier places to meet people — once you know where everyday social life actually happens.
Top 3 things to do — and how to turn them into plans
- 1
Watch sunset from Areopagus Hill
Free, central and full of people — an easy first plan to propose. On Sidecar, you can post exactly this as a plan — or join someone else's.
- 2
Wander the Anafiotika lanes
A tiny island village under the Acropolis; perfect for a slow group walk. On Sidecar, you can post exactly this as a plan — or join someone else's.
- 3
Coffee in Exarchia
The city's most talkative neighbourhood — long coffees are the local sport. On Sidecar, you can post exactly this as a plan — or join someone else's.
Sidecar is for locals meeting locals, travellers meeting locals, and fellow travellers meeting each other. Friends only.
Start with the kafeneio rhythm
Coffee in Athens is not a quick stop; a freddo espresso can last two hours. Inviting someone for coffee is the lowest-pressure plan in the city, and almost everyone says yes.
Neighbourhoods like Koukaki, Pangrati and Exarchia have plenty of cafés where a small group can sit for as long as the conversation runs.
Use the evenings
Dinner often starts at 21:00 or later, and summer evenings stretch well past midnight. A walk up Philopappos Hill at sunset or a late souvlaki run is a natural small-group plan.
Follow your interests
Record shops, open-air cinemas in the warmer months, flea markets on Sunday mornings and the many small galleries are good places to meet people who like what you like.
An activity-first plan (“browsing records, then coffee”) is easier than an open invitation to “hang out”.
Learn a few words of Greek
“Kaliméra” (good morning), “efcharistó” (thank you) and “yamas” (cheers) go a long way. Many Athenians speak English, but the effort is always noticed and appreciated.
Find your people on Sidecar
Sidecar shows small, platonic plans in Athens in time order — happening now, in the next two hours and later — each with a host introduction, a public meeting place and the number of open spots. Request to join, or post your own plan.
