Moved to a new city and feeling lonely? A gentle plan for the first month
Loneliness after a move is extremely common and says nothing about you. Friendships form through repetition and shared activities — so the goal for the first month is simply to create more of both.
Week 1: become a regular somewhere
Pick one café, one gym or one market and go repeatedly. Familiar faces turn into nods, nods into small talk. It feels slow, but it is the foundation of local belonging.
Week 2: join one small plan
Find a small group activity with a clear time and place and join it. One plan is enough. You are not auditioning for friendship — you are just spending an hour with people.
Week 3: host one small plan
Invite two or three people to something you would do anyway: a walk, a museum, lunch. Hosting gives you control and makes it easy for shy people to join.
Week 4: follow up
The second meeting matters more than the first. Message someone you liked and suggest a specific plan. Most friendships fail not from rejection but from nobody asking again.
Be kind to yourself
Some weeks will be quiet. That is normal. If loneliness starts to feel heavy for a long time, talking to a professional or a support line is a strong and sensible step.
